What Does a Timing Belt Do?

The timing belt keeps the camshaft and crankshaft turning at the correct rate. The crankshaft moves pistons up for compression and exhaust cycles, while the pistons move down for power and intake cycles. Depending on the vehicle make, a timing belt will also run the water pump, oil pump and injection pump.

Step 1: Preparation

First, prepare your civic and workarea. Make sure the engine is completely cool before you start. Put the engine in gear (to prevent its pinning when you're removing the old honda civic timing belt) and engage the hand brake.

Step 2: Removing the Belts

The fan belt and power steering belts it beside the cover which houses the timing belt and water pump, so you'll need to remove them first.

Step 3: Removing the Timing Case

The timing case covers the timing belt and water pump, so you'll need to remove it.

Step 4: Marking the Cogs

Before you loosen the pulley and remove the timing belt, it's a really good idea to mark the cogs.

Step 5: Removing the Timing Belt

Loosen the middle tensioner cog in the middle of the timing configuration; it's smaller than the two cams and will have abolt on it. Then push down on the spring and move it downwards. Then tighten the bolt to lock it in place.

Step 6: Removing the Water Pump

Loosen the bolts on the water pump a little at a time to slowly drain the coolant. When the flow of cool ant has slowed to a drip you canfully remove the bolts and take out the water pump. Then remove the old gasket(the piece of metal which connects the water pump to the cylinder head).

Step 7: Reassembly

Make sure the cogs still line up with the white marks you made earlier now the new timing belt replacement is in place and tight. Then connect the timing cover, crank shaft pulley, motor mount brackets and belts.
